Official Development Assistance
The British Council delivers projects that contribute to the UK's international development goals. Official Development Assistance (ODA) is UK tax payers' money that supports aid and development in low to middle income countries. We deliver programmes that promote economic development and welfare in these countries which contribute to building trust and opportunity with the UK. We support economic growth by supporting social enterprise and the creative economy and we help build stronger, safer societies through our programmes in the rule of law, governance, civil society and the arts.
Through our work in arts we find new ways of connecting with and understanding each other to develop stronger creative sectors around the world. Our expert team in the UK and around the world works to five broad aims: to share UK arts with the world; to foster collaborations and networks; to build capacity in creative sectors; to foster social change; and to support the shaping of policy and research. This cultural exchange helps create modern and vibrant creative sectors, building connections, trust and opportunity. It can also help to bring together divided communities and people affected by conflict.
Our global arts programmes include cultural seasons and festivals in countries around the world, supporting skills building and entrepreneurship, touring exhibitions of the UK’s leading artists and designers, film festivals, book fairs, and dance, music and theatre performances and exchanges.
In the literature team we use our connections and understanding of the UK literature sector to advise and support our international colleagues on working with literature within cultural relations programmes and provide a link to the UK. Together we develop projects to encourage showcasing, collaboration and professional exchange. We work in partnership with writers and other literature professionals to build relationships between reading, writing, translation, literature development and publishing communities in the UK and around the world
Some of the main opportunities/challenges include:
• Act as team lead to identify opportunities for the development of literature programmes appropriate to the ODA (Overseas Development Assistance) framework
• Work on multiple programmes with different cultural and operational contexts (resources, capacity, infrastructure, market, political)
• Create opportunities for the UK literature sector that encourage international showcasing, collaboration and professional exchange within a cultural relations context
The successful candidate must have
• Experience of working in an international context or with different cultures
• A good, wide knowledge of contemporary UK literature and the ability to make critical judgements across different genres
• A good network of contacts across the UK literature sector
• A track record in literature programming
We would particularly welcome applications from people who have worked with the arts in community engagement or development programmes in the UK or overseas.
Please be aware that this role is being offered on a part-time basis (18 hours) and can be based around flexible working hours. For example, the successful candidate could work over three or four short days. Please specify preference in cover note.
